Aftermath
The Tri-State Tornado left a path of devastation in it's aftermath. Due to it's time period, records of it's devastation were limited but it was estimated that over 695 people were killed. The tornado was a rare event that few will ever experience but those that experienced this will never be the same.
To exemplify the damage of this rare weather event, here are some statistics of it's devastation according to the National Weather Service:
- 3 states affected ( Missouri, Illinois, Indiana)
- 13 counties affected, including:
- Missouri: Reynolds, Iron, Madison, Bollinger, Perry
Illinois: Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, Hamilton, White
Indiana: Posey, Gibson, Pike
- Missouri: Reynolds, Iron, Madison, Bollinger, Perry
- 19+ communities affected, including:
- Missouri: Ellington, Redford, Leadanna, Annapolis, Cornwall, Biehle, Frohna
- Illinois: Gorham, Murphysboro, De Soto, Hurst-Bush, Zeigler, West Frankfort, Eighteen, Parrish, Crossville
- Indiana: Griffin, Owensville, Princeton
- 13 counties affected, including:
- 3 1/2 hours of continuous disaster
- Over 15,000 homes destroyed
- 695 recorded deaths
- 234 deaths in Murphysboro, a record for only one community from such a disaster.
- 33 deaths at the De Soto school, another record for such a storm
- Over 2,027 injuries
